Essentiellement connu pour ses travaux pionniers en droit international privé, sa culture juridique ne s’y limitait nullement tandis que sa pensée critique sur le droit rayonna bien au-delà de l’Europe. Homme engagé, il fut de nombreux combats, ce qui l’amena sur les chemins du droit international public à la recherche d’un monde plus juste. Conseil de la République islamique d’Iran devant le Tribunal des différends irano-américain et juge ad hoc désigné par l’Iran dans une affaire contre les Etats-Unis portée devant la Cour internationale de Justice, il dirigea à Louvain les recherches doctorales de plusieurs chercheurs iraniens devenus plus tard des figures importantes du monde universitaire et administratif iranien, dont le Professeur Mohsen Mohebi, co-directeur de ces mélanges.
